Now that we are all in our taper it’s time to do our last bit of preparation before the 2016 Boston Marathon. There are the obvious items to pack and then there are a few extras things you can do ahead of time!
- Practice waving at people on your taper runs – I love this one! Sure not everyone one will wave back or even acknowledge you, but it’s great practice. Your cheering section in Boston is expected to be 1 million strong! It’s time to get ready!
- Tweak your running play list. If you listen to music and you value it’s importance consider adding a couple of new songs. It sounds extremely corny and ridiculous now, but the theme song to Rocky or Chariots of Fire can be very motivational in a race!
- Plan a few movie nights before leaving for Boston. Let’s face it, you aren’t running enough to be sleepy at your usual bedtime. Prefontaine, Without Limits, Chariots of Fire, Running Brave, McFarland, USA and The Barkely Marathon Documentary are my personal favorites. Here’s a link to the top 25 running movies.
- Don’t look at the weather reports or extended forecasts for race day until a week out and remember the weather is out of your hands!!! I learned the hard way in 2012. The extended forecast for that race was amazing! Seven days out from the race the forecast still showed upper 50’s on race day. Every subsequent day I checked the weather it went up and up. I originally planned to wear boots on my flight out and by the time we left for Boston I was in flip-flops reviewing heat advisories. (If the weather ends up being hot this year I highly recommend you read this post!)
