There is a very good reason why some people have a ritualistic pasta dinner before their long runs or race. It is because it works for them. Not everyone believes in a big pasta dinner the night before a long run. Some people like a steak or sushi (my mom!) and my running partner loves barley. The point is that this meal is important and should not be overlooked or underestimated.
Even with years of running experience I recently skipped this cardinal rule of run preparation. It was a painful reminder that nachos and gelato are not great choices before a big running effort.
My hubby did say they were the healthiest nachos he had ever seen, but I cursed them for a solid 18 miles!
So what is the perfect dinner before a long run? That is for you to find out. This is an important part of your training. Hopefully you have an idea of what has worked in the past and can try versions of that meal while training. I’m not saying that this meal will always ensure a great run, but it’s eliminating a variable that may work against you!
My long run dinner consists of salmon with either pesto pasta or potato and a veggie. I don’t have an exact combo, but any version of that seems to work.
