This is a real condition. Hilarious name and hard to imagine, but trust me it is real.
Skirt Syndrome: Creates the sense of urgency to run/ bike or swim past (even if it’s beyond your means) any woman in a running skirt or woman exercising in general.
All women know Skirt Syndrome.
We know when it’s happening and have to stifle our laughs. It’s easy to hear you racing to catch us or when we pull up and you suddenly take off it’s obvious. It might just be an individual’s competitive nature in the presence of another athlete. It’s hard to know for sure.
Is this behavior sexist? Perhaps. It’s hard to think of another reason for this erratic training style. I’ll give some the benefit of the doubt, but when you sprint past me and stop 3 feet ahead of me it is suspect. I was trying to find a nice way of saying this… they never keep up their passing pace. Never! I’m not the fastest runner and usually I’m the perfect ego booster for those affected by this syndrome (you’re welcome). I do have my ‘on’ days!
The days that my running is good and I have a challenge it’s actually a little fun. Racing someone in to the trailhead and finding out they just ran 4 miles and you 11 miles and had the energy left to race. That’s just plain ole’ fun.
I’m not saying that guys need to stop this, but just admit it. I’ll tell you when a fit woman or man is running fast and I want to catch them. One thing I won’t do is take off when they catch up to me or I to them. Skirt Syndrome behavior needed a name and to be recognized. That’s all.
